Elder Bednar’s talk, Marriage is Essential
to His Eternal Plan” has always been a favorite talk of mine because of
the truthfulness of its contents. Perhaps the thing that stood out to
me the very most in this talk was when he talked about just how
important it was for us to be married. When I reached the age where I
started thinking about marriage, I found that I put a lot of my focus on
the excitement behind marriage like the wedding, the dress, the
engagement, etc. Though I felt this way for a long time even into the
later stages of my husband’s and my dating experience, I found that I
still had those petty things as my primary focus most of the time. It
was about a month before my wedding that I went through the temple with
my husband to receive my endowments that I really looked at marriage in a
much different light than I had before. For that month, in particular,
leading up to our marriage, I found myself thinking much more about the
temple, the blessings of starting a family, and a lot more of the
spiritual aspects of marriage rather than the temporal, petty things.
Elder Bednar brought up some fabulous points in his talk that described why marriage is such an amazing thing. One of which really meant a lot to me when I heard it. He said, “The natures of male and female spirits complete and perfect each other, and therefore men and women are intended to progress together toward exaltation.” I absolutely love this quote because, for me, it gives real meaning to the phrase, “We were meant for each other.” This idea definitely sparks some thoughts about the gay marriage debate and why the church does not condone it. I know for me, I always tend to think of the more obvious reasons like the fact that they cannot have kids together and how that is an essential part of God’s plan. Though that is a very important reason, I never had really thought about the idea that two men and two women just do not compliment, complete, or perfect each other like a man and a woman do. That is why Elder Bednar said a comment like this.
I also love how, in explaining this concept, he quoted the Family Proclamation, which clearly states the importance of gender and why the two genders, man and woman, were made for each other. I have such a testimony of the bounding together of a man and a woman in marriage because I have seen the blessings of it in my own life.
